03/01/15 New Haven, CT 922 Winchester Avenue dwelling fire

New Haven firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the top floor of this two and a half story, wood frame around three thirty a.m. Companies initially made an interior attack but were withdrawn due to a water supply issue. The fire soon took hold of the top floor and went through the roof. An exterior attack took about forty five minutes to darken down the fire before companies would regain entry to overhaul. All primary searches proved negative except for the removal of one family pet, a cat, which was found on the first floor. Several families were displaced. No one was injured in the blaze.

Prince Georges County Fire & EMS 4th and 6th Battalion units were toned out for the building fire in the Engineering Lab Building  on the University of Maryland campus on Monday.  First due units including Engine 812 (College Park), Truck 834 (Chillum-Adelphi), and Rescue Squad 814 (Berwyn Heights) located a small fire in one of the labs and knocked it quickly.  Units cleared smoke, checked for extension and performed overhaul.

PGFD HazMat units were briefly called to the scene since the fire was in a lab, but determined no hazardous materials mitigation was needed.  Units remained on the scene for approx. 2 hours.  Here are some apparatus and crew shots.

Cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction.  Working sprinklers were activated during the fire and helped to keep damage to a minimum.
