Some recollections … June 1 1987, about 1930 hrs. I had shopped here many times … a large store/warehouse complex. They sold and warehoused carpet and appliances. This was a bunch of buildings cobbled together, and they even had a railroad siding inside for deliveries.

The fire was heavy in the carpet warehouse section when I arrived. I lived in a hi-rise apartment at the time near O’Hare and could see it from my balcony. I arrived in very short order and observed a lot of standing water in the front of the building. It seemed like a water main had broken, further complicating matters. I setup shop on the east side of the building and watched the fire march from front to back. The Melrose Park Grumman tower ladder and the Westchester Maxim/Hahn mid-mount aerial would setup and the fire would already have raced past them. What little water they had came out brown and sandy, due to the broken water main I guess.

This fire was a huge loss, and one of the largest I have ever attended. The day after photos give somewhat of an idea of the scope of the disaster. I shot this with my trusty Minolta X700 with a Sunpack “potato masher” flash on Ektachrome 400. The film has gotten a magenta cast over the years which I have color corrected. Compared to what I shoot now the grain looks like the size of footballs. It’s hard to believe this was over a quarter century ago….

Several photographers contributed photos from the scene of a commercial fire in Evanston, IL that destroyed a restaurant and adjacent stores during the early morning hours of December 29, 2013. Upon arrival of the first Evanston units, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm and then to a 2nd Alarm.

Two tractor-drawn aerials and one tower ladder operated elevated master streams in addition to several multi-versals. There was a major structural collapse of one side of the corner building during the defensive attack. One firefighter suffered from an ankle injury during the incident.

(from Steve Redick) Took in this job in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The fire was in the downtown area at Davis and Oak. I arrived just as they were getting water to the Skokie tower ladder. The fire involved two restaurants and a nail salon and threatened some additional similar occupancies. This fire was very noteworthy because it is the only time I can recall two tillered trucks operating at a single fire. Around here tillers are a very rare beast. There was a catastrophic collapse, most likely due to the failure of the truss roof structure, but it was well anticipated and all members were well clear.

Sunday afternoon, April 4, 2013 The Adams County 911 Center located in Gettysburg Pennsylvania began receiveing calls for an apartment building fire with people trapped. At 13;46s hours, Box 29-1 was dispatched for a apartment building fire with possible people trapped.

Chief 29 of the Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services Fire Company (S.A.V.E.S ) went responding, and requested a  working fire dispatch as heavy black smoke was visible several miles away at the S.A.V.E.S. fire station.

Chief 29 was notified that the dispatcher was receiving multiple calls of fire and people trapped and possible jumpers.

Engine 29 arrived, laying a five-inch supply line from a hydrant about two blocks away, positioning themselves at the B/C corner of a eight-unit apartment building with heavy fire showing from the third unit from the end (Bravo end).

A second alarm assignment was requested. EMS immediately packaged an injured victim and left the scene within minutes of arrival via ambulance.

Quint 29 positioned on Side A with E/T 29 right behind them. Hand lines were advanced in from both sides A and C. Heavy fire was found to be in the initial unit as well as extended into the Delta exposure unit. The fire ran the cockloft into apartment 4, venting itself between units 2 and 4.

Entrapment reports proved negative after searches were completed. A person was reported to have jumped prior to the fire department’s arrival. Extensive overhaul was needed. The American Red Cross assisted the families affected by the fire on scene.
