Companies were dispatched to the report of a house fire just before 1300 hrs Sunday afternoon on the 300 block of Division in Lemont, IL.  They had heavy fire in sector C on arrival and the incident was upgraded to a full still.  A large amount of clutter inside made getting to the seat of the fire difficult.  Lines were stretched interior as well as a line that was used in sector C from the exterior in order to access the second floor.

Eventually, the fire consumed the attic space in the 2-story and 1-story portions of the home.  Companies were ordered out of the building and into defensive mode.  Lemont Engine 921’s deck gun, Tri-State’s tower ladder and Lemont Truck 949 were put to work and the remaining fire in the attic was brought under control shortly after.  The home was occupied but the owner was out and returned home to find the residence a total loss.

One crew of Firefighter-Paramedics made entry through the front door with an 1-3/4″ handline, while a second crew made entry through the kitchen with a second 1-3/4″ handline. The roof and ceiling in the living room had already burned completely away, well ventilating the structure.

Water supply was conducted with a tender shuttle; there were some access problems on the narrow dirt road. Units were on the scene for over four hours. The fire appears to have started in an exterior wall where a vent pipe for the wood burning stove was located. The fire burned inside the wall, exiting the structure on the rear of the house, but reentered the attic space at the eave. It spread unchecked throughout the attic space completely destroying two rooms and burning the roof off over three rooms. The remainder of the home suffered heat, smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 1, Tender 5, Tender 9, Tender 17, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Tender 903, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded.

Arriving units were unable to see the fire  in the rear of the structure until they got all the way to the house. Since the area is without hydrants, the alarm was upgraded immediately to a Box Alarm, then to a 2nd Alarm shortly thereafter. One engine and a 75′ quint made it up the driveway and a relay operation was initiated from the street. Three portable tanks were used on the road as two engines supplied 5″ lines to the quint and the engine in the driveway.

As the fire overhead grew, companies had to pull out and resort to a defensive operation. Several hand lines and an aerial pipe were put into operation. Due to the water needs and the route tenders had to take to refill and return, the alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for additional tenders.
