Wilmette (IL) firefighters were called to their first fire of the day Monday afternoon just before 2PM (8/22/16) at 1336 Ashland Avenue where workers were apparently on the roof. The initial report was a possible attic fire. The house was located within blocks of Wilmette Station 26 and units arrived quickly reporting smoke from the attic and some visible fire. The alarm was upgraded to the Code 4 working fire which brought mutual aid companies from Evanston, Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Skokie.

The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes though companies remained on the scene for over an hour doing overhaul, venting, and chasing hot spots. Most mutual aid companies were released before 3:30PM when RED Center dispatched another house fire in Wilmette. This will be covered in a separate post.

The Dixie Square Mall opened in the south Chicago suburb of Harvey back in 1966 and at the time, it featured all of the “modern” comforts of a beautiful shopping center.  When looking at pictures from it’s grand opening, it is hard to believe that this could happen, but instead of becoming a mainstay of the community, the mall closed in 1978 and became better known for it’s appearance in the classic movie The Blues Brothers.  Yes, it is the mall that Jake and Elwood drove through during the mall chase scene.

It sat vacant for over 30 years and had many small fires set in it over that period.  On a hot July evening back in 2009, a larger fire was set in what used to be the mall’s center foyer.  It spread across the wooden eaves of the old J.C. Penney store which is the larger structure you see in the images.  There wasn’t much drama at this one and most of the work was done by Harvey’s tower ladder.

There were some interesting long lead-outs as hydrants were quite a distance away.  With temperatures in the mid-90’s and no exposure issues, companies took their time accessing these hydrants to supply the tower and a few hand lines with water.  It has since been torn down.

Nate Arnold from Massachusetts submitted a fire from this past week.

Hadley, Mass. The volunteers of this small Hampshire County farming town were called out shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Sunday October 27, 2013 for the report of a fire at the strip mall located at 206 Russell Street. Members arrived on-scene to find an occupied two-story, wood frame construction, commercial building with smoke showing and an orange glow visible at the roof line. Hadley fire fighters along with mutual aid companies from Amherst and Northampton Fire Departments initially attempted an interior attack on the fire, but were forced to switch to a defensive attack when the fire took possession of the cockloft and extended throughout the building. By the end of the incident, a total of 4 alarms were struck bringing over 60 fire fighters to the scene throughout the night and into the following day for defensive operations. The building is a total loss, displacing 15 businesses and residents of two apartments.
