The Long Grove FPD (IL) was dispatched with mutual aid companies to the area of Old McHenry Road and Cuba Road Friday night (9/16/16) just after 9:30PM for a reported house fire. The location is just blocks from the fire station and the Long Grove units were in the area within minutes of the call. They found a vacant house in disrepair off of Shagbark Lane with heavy fire.
The Code 3 dispatch was quickly upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire. Nine units were due on the initial dispatch including three tankers and another 12 units with five tenders were due on the Code 4 along with several chief officers.
Long Grove Squad 55 and Tanker 55 used 4,000 gallons of water which was quickly supplemented by another 3,200 gallons from the Wauconda tanker and 1,000 gallons from Lake Zurich Engine 4 as a water supply operation was implemented with a tanker shuttle.
Eventually a Box Alarm and then a 2nd Alarm for tenders only brought multiple additional resources to the scene.
Kitchener, Ontario fire dispatch toned out Wellesley and St Clements for a barn fire at 4610 Hessen Strasse, August 9 at 7:35. Wellesley Township acting chief requested dispatch tone out Linwood for a full response as well. The large barn was fully involved on arrival. The owners of the property were using a garden hose to try to cool a driving shed next to the barn. This quick thinking likely saved the building. All firefighting was defensive. Command requested a crew to the scene from Baden to assist in suppression. Due to drought conditions in the Township, and a total fire ban, command made the decision to totally extinguish the fire. A large backhoe was used to pull the barn apart. Water was originally shuttled from a fire department cistern half a mile from the scene. Once emptied water was shuttled from a large spring fed pond two miles from the scene. The fire was declared out at 15:00. Fortunately the farmer had just sold 100 head of cattle, but lost six cows and a horse in the fire. Damage has been pegged at between $300,000 and $400,000. Box 690 provided rehab serving breakfast and lunch to the 35 firefighters on scene. Firefighters consumed 267 cold drinks over the course of the day.
Cambridge, Ontario fire dispatch received a call from Regional Ambulance reporting a propane explosion in a large industrial building at 1429 Branchton Road in North Dumfries Township with one serious burn victim March 3, 2016. Cambridge dispatched a full response; four stations and tanker to the call at 7:46, assuming there was a fire in addition to the medical call for the burn patient.
Cambridge covers this area under contract for first hour for North Dumfries Township. A second 911 call from the farm confirmed a fire in one of their buildings. P5 requested both North Dumfries tankers when updated by this additional information confirming a fire. Once on scene, P5 reported a very large chicken barn approximately 200 x 30’, fully involved and requested a full response from North Dumfries.
North Dumfries responded with their two pumpers and two tankers and approximately 20 firefighters. North Dumfries’ chief requested dispatch to activate mutual aid for two tankers from St George (Brant County). Tankers shuttled water from a hydrant approximately ¾ of a mile from the scene. An excavator was brought in to pull the building down to gain access to hot spots. The Ontario Fire Marshall, TSSA, and fire prevention are investigating the fire to determine the cause. Box 690 was on scene for six hours providing rehab.
Kitchener (Ontario) fire dispatch toned out the New Dundee Fire Department for a possible structure fire at 1330 Bleams Road on January 4 at 15:12. The New Dundee district chief could see heavy smoke from his workplace approximately five miles from the scene and requested a full turnout from the Baden Fire Department. A New Dundee firefighter arrived on-scene and reported a fully-involved barn with two serious exposures; a house 20 feet away and a large barn with an attached driving shed approximately 40 feet away. New Dundee requested New Hamburg’s tanker, rescue, and quint be added to the call.
The captain on New Dundee’s pumper reported windows on the house and barn were cracked and set up lines for a defensive attack and to protect exposures. Water was shuttled by four tankers from a hydrant approximately a mile from the scene. Firefighters saved the house and barn with minimal damage, a very good save on a very cold day. The temperature hovered around zero Fahrenheit. A backhoe was used to pull the steel siding off hot spots. Box 690 provided rehab for six hours. Hot drinks and Hot Shot hand warmers were very popular. Damage was pegged at $60,000.
Lebanon and Dauphin county fire departments responded to the building fire on Homestead Road, Grantville, PA in East Hanover Township on Friday morning, Nov. 27. First arriving units found heavy fire & smoke showing from the auto salvage building. Multiple tanker task forces responded for water supply. A master stream was facilitated by Truck 12 (Ono Fire Co.) and Lebanon County’s Special Ops/HazMat Co. 50 responded to investigate some unknown substance(s) stored in the building. Firefighters worked for hours razing the building’s remaining sheet metal walls to chase hot spots.
All three Wellesley Township, Ontario stations were dispatched to an attic fire at 4350 Hessen Strasse at 13:55. Car 1 arrived on scene and reported light smoke in the 2,000 square-foot metal fabrication shop. Firefighters found a small fire in the attic at the E3 – E4 corner of the building. Crews pulled one line to the interior and used one line off the aerial to quickly knock the fire down. Box 690 provided rehab at the fire.
June 22, 2015 14:35, Wellesley Township, Linwood, and St Clements stations were dispatched to 5903 Ament Line for a fire in the shop. Linwood reported smoke visible from the hall, and Wellesley was added to the call at this time. Linwood reported a large shop/garage fully-involved on arrival, with a large barn containing 150 head of cattle as an exposure. Two tankers were requested from neighboring Perth East station in Milverton. The fire was brought under control in an hour. A high hoe was brought in to pull the building apart. Box 690 provided rehab, serving over 100 cold drinks to the 30 firefighters and emergency personnel on scene.
