house fully involved in fire

At approximately 0605 hrs on Sunday morning (2/12), the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received several calls for a fire at the intersection of 44th and Shields Ave. in Chicago. Engine 50 landed on the scene and confirmed a fire in a 2.5-story vacant frame with exposure to a 1.5-story occupied frame. Two minutes later, the 2nd Battalion reported he had heavy fire in the 2.5-story and requested a Box. The first image below was taken just before Engine 50 opened up with their deck gun which knocked down a lot of the visible fire in the front. There was a lot of fire extension into the occupied exposure and companies made an interior attack on that structure. Eventually Squad 5’s Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought down to mop up the remaining fire in the original building which was under rehab. In an October, 2015 Google Streets image, the building was a Red-X and appeared to have had a basement fire in it previously. Eric Haak

A passing motorist reported a home burning Friday evening 22-May at 3541 Azalea Patch Road. At 22:15, the first caller to Colleton County (SC) 9-1-1 advised the home was well-involved with flames coming through the roof. Firefighters arrived minutes later to find the ranch-style home approximately 80 percent involved and most of the roof had already collapsed. A large workshop behind the home was being threatened.

First arriving units requested a second alarm and directed Engine 4 to set up a water shuttle operation at a dry hydrant located ½ mile north of the incident. Crews used a deck gun, two 2-1/2” handlines and four 1-3/4” handlines to combat the fire, as well as protect the exposure.

Firefighters had the bulk of the fire knocked down within twenty minutes, but remained on the scene performing overhaul for four hours. The unintentional fire appears to have started in an upstairs room and had been burning for some time before the motorist saw the flames. No one was at home when the fire occurred. Four dogs in the back yard were not injured.

Engine 1, Engine 4, Engine 10, Engine 18, Engine 31, Tender 1, Tender 4, Tender 13, Tender 15, Tender 26, Tender 90, Medic 13, Medic 18, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 105 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.

Shortly after midnight (Monday morning), a CPD patrol car radioed in a fire at 5757 S. Hermitage stating that fire was blowing out of the front window. Only being 4 blocks from the address Josh & I took in the fire. We arrived just ahead of Engine 116 to find fire blowing out of the 1st floor front room and extending up the front of the 2-1/2, 25×50 frame. Engine 116 lead out a line to the front and hit the main body of fire from the outside while Tower 39 went to the roof for ventilation. Engine 123 backed down to Tower 39 and was setup to use their deck gun, but that order was canceled.

Great job by companies in knocking down this fire fast. This area of Hermitage has homes butted up to each other on the sides and this could have gotten out of control quickly.
