firemen with dirty faces

This fire came in about 1:30 Saturday afternoon (1/28/17). It was in a great old home from the 1800’s at at 4500 S. Ellis in Chicago. I arrived just after it was boxed by the 5th Battalion. It looked like the fire was mostly in the attic area. The exposure was reported as vacant and in poor condition but the fire was held to the original occupied section. Eric Haak

Christmas morning was a busy one for fire companies in Chicago’s 18th Battalion as they battled 2 still & box alarm fires within hours of each other.  The first was in the 6900 block of South Throop and occurred at about 0730 hrs.  The second occurred less than a mile from the first, on the 6500 block of South Marshfield.  The second fire was dispatched at 1010 hrs.  I arrived about 25 minutes in and smoke was still pouring fairly heavily from the roof.  The 18th Battalion Chief boxed this fire shortly after arrival, reporting a fire in the basement with fire on the first and moving to the second.  The building was a 25 x 60, occupied 2-flat.  4 lines were used, all from Engine 116 which was the only engine flowing water.  The box was struck at 1105 hrs.  10 residents were displaced by this incident.

Thanks to Eric Haak for another submission, this time from a fire in Chicago

Here is another great example of a fire originating in back porches and going on to nearly consume an entire structure.

This occurred back in September, 2009 near the corner of 56th and Justine in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s south side.  Engine 116 called for a Still & Box as they pulled up to this 2.5 story, 25 x 50 frame as it was communicating to the occupied 2.5 story, 25 x 100 frame to the south.  The “rear porches” were fully involved and fire was already extending into the attic.

As companies made entry, fire could be seen venting from the windows and ceiling just above them.  The attic and second floor eventually became fully involved and there was an emergency evacuation ordered as the roof collapsed while companies worked inside.

Tower Ladder 39 was set up to snuff out the remaining fire in the attic which was eventually completely consumed.  While fire did get into the southern exposure, companies did a great job of getting to that quickly and the damage to this building was held to a minimum.

The kids from the neighborhood had a lot of questions about what it is like to be inside of the burning building and this member entertained them with his great answers.
