Kitchener (ON) fire dispatch toned out Conestogo Pump 1, Tank 2, and Rescue 3, Elmira P1, Tank 2, and Rescue 4 plus Floradale Tank 2 to a possible barn fire at 6714 Middlebrook Road October 20, 2017 at 14:50. The Woolwich deputy chief advised dispatch that the farm had a burn permit and they were dismantling a barn and burning unusable wood. Dispatch advised they had received a call from the farm stating the controlled burn had jumped into wood in the foundation of the old barn and was threatening numerous other out buildings.

Responding crews reported a good loom up on route to the call. A Floradale firefighter arrived on scene first advising a large, out of control burn was threatening a driving shed, two other sheds, and a nearby house. Elmira P1 was first on scene and pulled into the driveway closest to the fire. Numerous small and large lines were pulled to protect exposures.

Conestogo’s pumper pulled into the adjacent driveway downwind of the fire and pulled one line to cool the roof of the house. Three port-a-tanks were setup to feed water to the Elmira pumper. Water was shuttled from a large pond approximately five miles from the fire.

Maryhill’s tanker was added to the call at 15:30 to augment the water supply. Center Wellington, Elora station from neighboring Wellington County arrived on scene at 16:15 with a pumper and tanker. They had been dispatched for a possible brush fire in the area. They dropped their 3,000 US gallon load and returned to base. Firefighters were able to save two sheds and house. A small building immediately beside the barn was well involved on arrival and couldn’t be saved.

Box 690 provided rehab. I left on the dispatch for the fire that was 15 miles from my residence. Shots were taken approximately 20 minutes into the call.

Kitchener (ON) fire dispatch received a call for smoke coming from the vents of a house at Lobsinger Line and Green Hills Road. Linwood and Wellesley stations were toned out on the first alarm January 11 at 14:00. A volunteer firefighter was just down the road at the township office and was on scene in two minutes reporting a working fire. St Clements Station was toned out on the second alarm as well as Box 690 at 14:04.

Crews found fire in the basement and main floor with extension up to the second floor walls. No one was home and the fire was knocked down in an hour. Extensive overhaul needed on all three floors.

Photos taken an hour into the fire when I arrived on scene with the Canteen Truck. Two Box 690 members had rehab set up by 14:30 from their personal vehicles. Approximately 25 firefighters on scene with three rescues, three pumpers, three tankers, and a 82’ quint. Water was shuttled from a nearby cistern at a local church.

Cambridge, Ontario fire dispatch received a call from Regional Ambulance reporting a propane explosion in a large industrial building at 1429 Branchton Road in North Dumfries Township with one serious burn victim March 3, 2016. Cambridge dispatched a full response; four stations and tanker to the call at 7:46, assuming there was a fire in addition to the medical call for the burn patient.

Cambridge covers this area under contract for first hour for North Dumfries Township. A second 911 call from the farm confirmed a fire in one of their buildings. P5 requested both North Dumfries tankers when updated by this additional information confirming a fire. Once on scene, P5 reported a very large chicken barn approximately 200 x 30’, fully involved and requested a full response from North Dumfries.

North Dumfries responded with their two pumpers and two tankers and approximately 20 firefighters. North Dumfries’ chief requested dispatch to activate mutual aid for two tankers from St George (Brant County). Tankers shuttled water from a hydrant approximately ¾ of a mile from the scene. An excavator was brought in to pull the building down to gain access to hot spots. The Ontario Fire Marshall, TSSA, and fire prevention are investigating the fire to determine the cause. Box 690 was on scene for six hours providing rehab.
