Made a quick trip to Detroit last week, overall very quiet. These first shots are from a couple of daytime box alarms that weren’t much to see by the time we got in.

This was the first box of the day on October 11, 2015 in Detroit.  I was on the other side of town and it took a little time to get there.  Engine 33 was only a few blocks away and had heavy fire showing from the attic.  A real nice save as the frames on both sides were occupied and sustained minimal damage.  It can’t be seen from the front but most of the house behind the facade collapsed in the rear and the damage was much worse than what it looks like.  You can also see the old and the new engine styles with Engine 33 being the newer edition.  Over the three days I was in town, there were at least 5 occupied structure fires, two of which had transports for civilians with burns or smoke inhalation.  Overnight on the 11th, there were at least six Box Alarms that I could count but none of which were going throughout.  On Saturday afternoon, Engines 50 and 60 had two workers within an hour and a half but I couldn’t get to either of them in time for anything of photographic value.  Overall, a very busy weekend in Detroit but no commercial buildings and no alarms above the box.

This was a box at Hague and John R. There was radio traffic from this job all over the internet. An occupied with the rescue of a victim. No EMS unit available was given on the radio. The IC requested permission to transport the victim in a waiting police car but was denied, reported the victim undergoing CPR. That is just when we arrived on the scene. Out of respect for the victim and family I didn’t shoot the ems efforts. When we arrived it appeared to me the victim was unconscious but breathing, and an ambulance arrived 2 minutes behind us. I understand this person survived the ordeal based on later news reports. At any rate, as bad as the radio traffic sounded, I felt EMS arrived in a reasonable time considering they said they had no units available. I believe Statter911 had posted this radio traffic if you want to find it. This dwelling had some pretty good smoke conditions when we arrived, but they got it in short order.

This box at Forest and St Clair, was a real job … unfortunately it occurred at rush hour, we were 7 miles away and stuck in heavy traffic … It’s amazing we got what we did … 2 large exposures. one occupied, severely threatened. We arrived just prior to the collapse of the fire building. Exposure 2 looked like an occupied 2-flat … exposure 4 a similar vacant … It looked very much in doubt for a few minutes … but as usual, a good stop was made. The red and white rig was 1 of 2 in service, and now I think is a very worn out spare.
