At 9:40 AM on Saturday, 2/8/20, units were dispatched to a reported building fire at 2803 Poag St, in Fairfax County, Virginia.  A five-story building under construction had heavy fire showing on the top floor.  Due to the wood-frame construction of the buildings, lack of sprinkler systems, windy conditions, and water supply issues, the fire rapidly spread throughout the complex.  The fire quickly grew to 4+ alarms, bringing units from Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince George’s counties, the City of Alexandria, and Fort Belvoir.  In the end, the fire destroyed 5 buildings plus 14 townhouses under construction, and damaged an additional 14 townhouses, 4 single-family homes, 5 apartment buildings, 1 commercial building, and 28 vehicles.  The cause is still under investigation, and damage estimates are unknown.

Washington, DC firefighters battled this 2-alarm blaze on Delafield PL, NW on Monday, 1/4/16.  Units arrived on scene to find heavy fire on the 2nd floor.  During the event, evac tones were sounded and a Mayday was called when part of E21’s crew was temporarily unaccounted for.  Thankfully, they were quickly found to be safe.  The family dog was rescued from the structure as well.  Cramped city streets, the proximity of neighboring homes and electrical wires in close proximity created challenges in fighting the fire.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

From the Fairfax County FD Facebook page:

Units responded to a house fire Friday, October 30, 2015, at approximately 8:40 p.m., in the McLean area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 1858 Massachusetts Avenue.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the three-story home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack; however, they were not able to save any of the home due to the volume of fire. A sounding smoke alarm allowed an adult female to escape the home from a second floor bedroom. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupant. She was transported to Arlington Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The home was a complete loss.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. The refrigerator in the kitchen malfunctioned and caused the fire.
