Wheeling (IL) firefighters were dispatched for a working fire Saturday evening at 728 River Walk Drive. A neighbor called to report fire on the outside deck of a unit across the communal driveway that appeared to originate from a propane grill and was extending from the second floor deck to the third floor.

A Wheeling police officer evacuated the resident and firefighters made a quick initial hit with an exterior line that knocked down the bulk of the fire within minutes. Companies entered the unit to extinguish fire that had spread to the interior and stopped the fire from entering and taking hold of the attic space. Units from Mt. Prospect, Northbrook, and Arlington Heights assisted the Wheeling companies at the scene.

Kitchener, Ontario fire dispatch toned out St Clements and Wellesley for a confirmed structure fire at 3482 Hessen Strasse at 14:55. The St Clements district chief asked for details on the call and requested a second alarm, a full response from Linwood. Shop workers were using a blow torch to remove some metal fixtures from the wall. They noticed smoke coming from the walls and evacuated the sand blasting business and called 911. St Clements arrived on scene reporting smoke showing. Water was initially used from tankers, and then a 4” line was dropped from a fire department 50,000 gallon cistern located 600 feet down the laneway. The fire was contained to the wall and a small portion of the attic. Overhaul took 2.5 hours pulling the siding down, and clearing cellulose insulation from the attic. Photos taken 30 minutes into the call. Box 690 provided rehab.

This was a box at Larkins and Kirkwood in Detroit, MI on April 11, 2017. It’s not all flames and excitement, it’s shitty gritty work under lousy conditions, day after day

All the images and video can be seen here:

On Sunday morning, April 9th, I had the great opportunity to shoot the Detroit Fire Department at work. I was driving down I94 at Van Dyke when a Box Alarm came in on Van Dyke just northwest of Mack. I arrived and got into position just before the first companies landed. The primary fire building was going throughout with the D side exposure heavily involved and the B side occupied going. The DFD did an incredible job of saving the occupied home under these intense conditions.

Engine 1 dumped their monitor to knock down the fire on the roof of the occupied while Engine 9 connected to a hydrant. Engine 1 then moved out of the way and tagged a hydrant down the block. Companies immediately made entry to the occupied exposure and stretched a line to that building’s attic. Hand lines were dropped to protect the occupied exposure and the first arriving truck directed an elevated stream on the same. When the primary fire building collapsed, the exterior wall fell outward onto the exterior of the occupied exposure. Even with this added obstacle, the exposure was still saved. It was good to witness the DFD do what they do best. Hope you enjoy the images.
